VOCABULARY
 
VALUE  The lightness or darkness of a color.
 
EMPHASIS  To place attention to one or more elements in the composition.
To make something pop out, stand out.
 
SHADING  To color.
 
BLEEDING  To go over the line.
 
PATTERN  A repeating element.
 
GROUNDS 
FOREGROUND In the front.  There is only 1 foreground.
MIDDLE GROUND In the middle. 
There can be multiple middle grounds.
BACKGROUND   In the back. 
There can be only 1 background.
 
ATMOSPHERIC PERSPECTIVE  To create the sense of distance (depth) using value on a flat surface.
 
BRIGHTNESS The luminosity of a color.
 
COMMISSION  The act of requesting the creation of a work of art.
Artwork may be commissioned by private individuals, by the government, or private businesses.
 
PUBLIC ART  Art made for the public and displayed outdoors.
 
ART GALLERY A commercial art space where works of art are sold to collectors.
An art gallery is a for-profit entity.
 
MUSEUM  A corporation in charge to protect and preserve artistic culture.
A museum is a non-for-profit entity.
 
AUCTION HOUSE A private company that facilitates the buying and selling of assets, such as works of art and collectibles by means of auctions.

HATCHING  A technique used by drawing closely spaced parallel lines.
 
CONSTRUCTION LINES  Extremely thin, bearably visible pencils lines used to build an image.
 
COMPOSITION  Is the term used to describe the arrangement of the elements in a work of art.

It is how the elements are organized that give the work of art structure and convey the intent of the artist.

Done successfully, good composition draws the viewer in and then moves the viewer's eye across the whole work of art so that everything is taken in, finally settling on the main subject of the painting.

FORMAT  Orientation in space:
SIZE  Physical dimensions of an object / image.

The subject represented in a work of art.
 
FIGURE  Human form. 
Images of people in a work of art are referred to as figures.
 
REPRESENTATIONAL  The composition depicts recognizable objects.
Art that depicts the physical appearance of things.
 
ABSTRACT  Not representational.
Art that seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
 
ABSTRACTED  A composition in which recognizable objects are rendered in a simplified or distorted manner.
 
OVERLAPPING  extend over and cover part of.
INTERSECTING To cut across or through.
