This sprawling, erotically charged exhibition cavorts from Art Nouveau, through Art Deco, Modernism and into Abstract Expressionism, Pop, Funk and finally, the promiscuous world of Pomo. The procession of unclad males and females, all born of clay but otherwise stylistically disparate, includes some expected artists: Alexander Archipenko, Grayson Perry, Sir Anthony Caro and Beatrice Wood's humorous ladies from her bordellos. Some are a surprise, such as a unique suite of six nudes on slabs and plates by David Smith. The masterful wounded neoclassical figures by Doug Jeck and others bring the survey into the present. Bare Clay is dedicated to Karen Johnson Boyd whose two memorable exhibitions of this subject have set the standard.
