Anyone who visited New York sculptor Elise Siegel's installation in 2001 at Greenwich House came away deeply moved. Siegel has a unique ability to freeze time at a moment of poignant interruption in which one feels that one's arrival has stopped the action. In the new installation, designed specifically for our Long Island City Project Space, bodies from the waist down are placed in two rows of chairs, legs intertwined, while beyond this calm, intimate scene, a riot erupts. Twenty-one unglazed upper-torsos on wheeled stands raise their arms both in defense and aggression, leaving us to ponder what ignited the uproar and how it will be resolved. This exhibition is perfectly complemented by the extensive survey in the 57th street Space, Bare Clay: Ceramic Nudes in 20th Century Art. Elise Siegel lives and works in New York City.
