Through a detailed presentation students will be introduced to the silhouette, with particular reference to ancient and Greek history.  Students will learn about the work of contemporary artist Kara Walker.

Using the artist’s works as a source of inspiration, students will use charcoal pastels to create a work in which the use of color must reflect the student’s own personality.

Students will learn:

  1. the history of silhouette.that art is the oldest form of “written” communication.
  2. that art has been an expressive form of cultural development from the onset of time.
  3. that art can be used to express political and cultural issues.
  4. color charcoal techniques.
  5. To use color as a signifier and iconic messenger.
