This student’s work revolves around the complex subject of personal identity, and the sense of displacement lived by a first generation American of Chinese origin. White she chooses to use rice as an iconic referent of her own nationality, she also portraits her facial features as that of a white person (as particularly visible in the shape of her eyes). The newsprint in the background is from an American newspaper, which has been wiped out with primer to signify the impossibility for the student to identity with the makeup of the society in which she lives. The paper trimming around the panel is a referent to her childhood time spent with her grandmother in China, who would give her paper to rip and play with to keep her quiet. |
